One look at the Asics Gel Speedstar 5, and you will feel like you have stepped into the future. This newest edition to Asics running line has a sleek style that puts it ahead of its time, and at the top of its class as a minimalist shoe.
The design of this neutral minimalist shoe was to make as light of a shoe without compromising support or performance. This was done using Asics newest technology, the Solyte midsole, which is a much lighter alternative to the EVA midsoles featured in most running shoes. The Solyte material offers superior cushioning and enhanced durability.

Asics also uses the Solyte 45 technology that runs from heel to toe of the Speedstar 5 to offer a premium design of a plush albeit durable midsole. This will offer your foot the support and shock absorption it needs without adding several ounces to the shoe’s overall weight.
Tthe Asics Gel Speedstar 5 is equipped with a rearfoot GEL system in the heel that provides a smoother stride and strike. In addition, this sweet ride features the AHAR blown rubber heel plug to maximize shock absorption and dissipate impact.
This is not to say that Asics ignores the forefoot of this shoe, but quite the contrary! The Speedstar has Asics Durasponge technology on the shoe’s forefoot, which is also made with the extremely lightweight rubber outsole that gives the shoes a cushioned ride with enhanced durability.
The outsole is also equipped with a Racing Trustic System, which is a lighter alternative to the standard trusstic system. It’s a two piece outsole that provides more grip in the toe-off. What does that mean? Well, basically that you will be able to run faster in these babies!
Another cool feature to the Asics Gel Speedstars is the laces! The eyes are tucked away out of sight with an asymmetrical design that provides a more personal fit, and a more comfortable feel.
Also, there is a really lightweight rubber open mesh upper overlay on this shoe that gives the Speedstar its futuristic, almost holographic appearance. Not only will this newly designed mesh offer more breathability, but it is much lighter than the average mesh upper. In total, this shoe weighs a total of 8 ounces, and is destined to be a STAR in the world of minimalist shoes.
Is Asics GEL Speedstar 5 The Best Running Shoe For Me?
This shoe was released to limited retailers in November 2010, and made its grand debut to the rest of the world in January 2011.
So far, the Speedstar seems to be gaining a lot of popularity in the minimalist community. Many runners commented on it fitting like a glove, and being as light as a feather. Others commented on how their runs felt more natural with a smoother toe-off and transition from the heel.
For a minimalist shoe, runners felt this low-profile trainer was very responsive, and great for speed workouts. I would recommend this shoe for the experienced runner with normal arches who is looking to shave time off their personal best.
However, if you are a moderate overpronator and are looking for a minimalist shoe, you may want to check out our review on the Nike XT Quick Fit+, which offers more support.
Otherwise, try out a pair of the Asics Gel Speedstar 5, and know you will look and perform like a Total Rockstar at your next race!
